Okay, I’m back again with an Isotretinoin update / Skincare routine. I say ‘again’ because I tried this once in October and had an overwhelming response. I left the post up for 24 hours and in that time got more e-mails/comments than I could handle and about half of them were people telling my acne could be cleared by giving up coffee, milk, taking certain pills, etc. (Or trying to sell me on some MLM product.) So, here’s a disclaimer – this post is strictly for those who are interested in my experience on Accutane or who are looking for a skincare routine for dry skin. John and I both agreed years ago that Isotretinoin was a last resort — so after a decade of trying thousands of dollars of products, treatments, meds, etc, we decided to give this a try (and after TONS of research I may add.) Anyway, I was SO touched by some of the e-mails I received about that post – so many of you are struggling with adult acne – or just extremely oily skin. I love I’ve been able to chat with some of you on these topics & share in this struggle.
Second disclaimer – I am not a doctor. (hahaha.) Many of you are aware that I am close with a lot of physicians so I should let it be known that I am being watched closely by numerous people educated on this topic. Luckily, the only side effects I’ve experienced so far are fatigue & dry skin. If I were to see something bad happening to me – I would stop the medication.

-Okay… phew. Now that that’s over with I’ll update you all on my skin.
I did a 5 month course on Accutane & am finishing that course now. The first two months were… ehh, okay. The first month my skin was atrocious. The oil was zapped almost immediately but the pores in my face were purging so they felt like sandpaper. (ew.) The second month was nothing special… again, no oil production & I would get some acne here & there but nothing too awful. Now, the third month was SOO nice. I could see my skin changing… I wasn’t getting any acne really. The texture of my skin changed dramatically in the third month… I used to have a rough texture to my skin & during month 3 it started getting SO smooth. I won’t lie – there were times I thought I was going to cry because I’d never seen my skin be smooth like this. (Obviously happy tears, haha.) My entire life I’ve been SO good to my skin – I have never gone to sleep with makeup on, I have always invested in my skin care so I was thrilled to FINALLY see my skin change. Anyway… on to months 4/5… those weren’t anything special. After month 3, my skin plateaued. I don’t have oil, or acne (I may get a small blemish every 3 weeks but nothing crazy). Every time I see my mom she always says “WOAH! Your skin! Your pores are going away!” So that totally cheers me up. 🙂 (And it could be my primer, lol!)
-Next, I’ll share the downsides I’ve experienced..
Since this medication is strong- it can have some really bad side effects for some people… but not everyone. I won’t say it’s been an easy few months, but I will say I am SO happy with the results. And as far as I know, I should still see improvement for a couple of months after I’m done. Personally, the worst parts of Accutane are the dryness. My lips are cracking and peeling pretty much 24/7. The first 3 mos my nose hurt SO badly from the dryness, luckily no nose bleeds. And finally – it caused major fatigue. I mentioned on Snap the other night that I was getting a Sleep Study bc of the seizure this summer and because I’ve struggled with fatigue since undergrad. Well, since I am already prone to fatigue, Accutane just worsened it a bit. This actually brings me to…….. coffee. So yea, people ask about me always drinking coffee & Starbucks,etc. I think they think it’s a prop, lol!! But really, I have been drinking more coffee than usual since Accutane because it’s kept me going the past few months. PS. My friends & fam usually gift me Starbucks cards for birthdays, holidays, etc. which is why that’s my favorite place to go, free coffee. 🙂
I have friends who did Accutane who only had dry lips and that was their only side effect… so it’s completely different for EVERYONE.
The upside is that I wash my hair like every 7 days now..(insert party emoji here.) But yes, I still body shower haha.
-Finally, I’ll share my HOLY GRAIL products for battling dry skin this winter while on Isotretinoin..
So, the past 5 months, I have tried NUMEROUS moisturizers, eye creams, chapsticks, etc and I am pretty certain none can beat the ones that become my HG.
My Skincare Routine While on Accutane for Dry Skin
1.Each night & morning I wash my face with this Philosophy face wash. It is SO gentle & SOOOO nice if you have combo/dry skin.
2. Each morning and night I mix a dime sized amount of Cetaphil Moisturer (this exact bottle in photos) with a drop or 2 of this Jojoba oil. EVERYONE needs Jojoba oil in their bathroom. It will save your skin, hair, etc. from dryness. Its simply incredible. Research the product and you’ll learn more. (Also, the Sunday Riley oils are kind of expensive but are SO good… I know Jojoba oil is much cheaper and can be used on the hair as well so I wanted to recommend it.)
3. This med dries out your eyes as well & stops production of oil so you have to really take care of your eyes. I use eye drops to keep them from getting dry. I use this eyelash serum to keep my eyelashes growing since I am not producing oil in those glands. And most importantly, I am moisturizing the skin around my eyes like CRAZY. I use THIS moisturizer AM & PM. I use THIS cream at night & THIS cream in the am. (The AM cream is best for brightening the under eye area!!) These are all products that I will continue using after all of this. (PS. These products are $$$ but these are the ones I have found to be worth the money in caring for the skin around your eyes.)
4. I have 4 of these Dr. Dans Cortibalm because they are my main go-to during the day. My lips have been swelling a lot bc of the peeling so this chapstick helps a little with swelling. And this Agave Mask is my nightly must-have — it feels SOOOO good!! I like to wear it alone during the day if I am not wearing a lip color.
5. I have been using Vaseline inside of my nose while I sleep to help with the dryness inside. It makes a huge difference!
6. Spraying this Mac Fix+ on my skin after I apply makeup & throughout the day keeps my makeup from drying out or looking powdery. I have gone through so many bottles!

Everyone is complementing how smooth my skin looks 😀! I had severe acne all over my face, moderate on my shoulders and back. My skin acne made me miserable, it was all over my entire face and it was red and agreessive and bumpy. Now it is pale pink and has gone down drastically and I have only been on it for 2 weeks! The side effects I have experienced are dry skin and cracked lips. I put coconut oil on my lips and moisturise constantly and that is helping to manage it a lot.
I thought you had lip plumper on your lips on Snap. I was going to ask you which kind were you using. Didn't realize they were swollen 🙁 You still looked gorgeous!

if you ever want to try another skincare line, look into eltamd. my dermatologist recommended it…it isn't super expensive and it's great for sensitive skin! the melting moisturizer is perfect for night and the cream cleanser takes my makeup off without leaving my face feeling dry or tight.

Hello! I did accutane about 4 years ago and my favorite product to combat drying is eucerin aquaphor. My lips, nose, sides of my eyes and eyelids were incredibly cracked from the dryness. This helped a lot!
Also, I am sure you know this, but be extra careful. Every minor accident and paper cut I got during accutane left a scar as my skin was SO frail everywhere.

I had only the chapped lips and some patches of dry skin as side effects when I did my accutane treatment. And let me tell you, AQUAPHOR is the best thing everrrr for that. I bought a big tub and kept it on my lips all the time and it was like a miracle cure. I would put it on the dry patches of skin, too, and it worked like a charm. My dermatologist recommended it and she was totally right. If you haven't yet, give it a try! I still use it on my lips every night. 🙂
I have super, super dry nasal passages because of my allergies and blowing my nose 528362x a day. I used to use Vaseline in my nose to stop the dryness and heal the soreness, but I have discovered BagBalm and it works SO MUCH BETTER. I buy it at my local CVS it might help you too! It's also a great lip balm.
I love your post! I was on accutane 7 years ago and it worked miracles on my cystic acne! My face has gotten more oily over the years, but no more of the terrible,doesn't-ever-g-away, scarring type acne!! Honestly the best decision ever! My sister and I were both on it in high school and no longer lasting side effects 5-7 years later!
I went on Accutane 3 times (THREE TIMES!) in my teens and early 20s to get rid of my acne for good. I'm so glad it's working for you. The results are so worth the dry skin and chapped lips for a few months. Eurcerin cream worked wonders for my dry skin. I just turned 30 and my skin very rarely breaks out and if it does it's nothing like before. Now I use Aczone cream from my dermatologist just to have on hand and curb any minor breakout. I second the request on yout under eye make up. I was using NARS and since being on Accutane (just finished month 2) it makes my under eye wrinkles more obvious 🙁
Wow! Acutane sounds like kind of serious stuff- I think my sister is on that now, I am definitely going to share this link with her. I use to have really bad skin in HS and college. When i was pregnant with my first daughter it was so out of control (and on my back!) it literally hurt. I was so lucky to get a super mild (OK while pregnant) topical cream that worked wonders for me. Since I am done having kids now I have gone to something a little stronger that also has some anti aging components to it. I am so happy seeing a dermatologist- I think everyone should! I am glad you were able to fix your skin up now. It looks absolutely beautiful! Thanks for being honest and sharing (like always!)

I just finished my 6 month course on accutane! I am so lucky the only downside that I had was very dry skin, I would moisturize it multiple times a day. I used the CeraVe cream that comes in a bigger container, its a drug store brand and it was a miracle worker! Like you, I also tried absolutely everything for about 5 years before resorting to accutane as a last resort. The past 6 months were definitely hard but like you, I'm sooo thankful for the results! Glad you are happy with your results!

Accutane is the best! It helped get rid of the hard cystic acne I would get on my chin underneath the skin. If you don't have one already, get a humidifier for your bedroom to help hydrate your skin at night. We have one for our bedroom and our kids' bedrooms. My son gets dry lips, nose, and skin and it really helps.

I'm currently finishing up accutane as well! I'm on my last month and have experienced extremely dry skin and especially dry lips. I use Carmex lip balm at night and Baby Lips during the day, and I've been going through those like crazy!! Baby Lips are my favorite option for daytime because they have tinted versions as well as original, and my lips are much too dry for lipstick.

I just stumbled across your blogpost and I'm suffering from real bad acne, too. I took isotretinoin for about 3 years when I was 16, after suffering for 4 years already. I had THE best Skin ever, but now 3 years after stopping taking it, my Skin is not as nice anymore. It is still dry, but my texture is really bad and ew and my acne keeps coming back. Do you have any idea, what to do? Should I go back to the isotretinoin?

Glad it's working for you! I also took accutane when I was in my 20's. I took it for 6 months and my skin was SO much better for years afterward, really glad I did it. I'm 40 now and only in the last couple of years have I noticed a change again. My derm tells me the effects of accutane can wear off over time so now under her care I've been using topical tretinoin which has helped and has the added benefit of fighting wrinkles! I was surprised to see you say you have acne your skin always looks beautiful and your smile takes away from drawing any attention to it! I know it has to be frustrating especially with everyone putting in their two cents but I just have to say that not drinking Diet Coke or anything with artificial sweeteners dramatically helped my skin sometimes acne can be confused for a food allergy, the hormones in milk too make me break out instantly! I know everyone is different so I wish you the best of luck I hope the accutane works!!

I notice you recommend Cetaphil's moisturizing cream as opposed their daily facial moisturizer – is that purely because you felt that it worked better in terms of moisturizing your skin? I'm using the regular daily facial moisturizer and it's definitely keeping me moisturized but I hate that it leaves a bit of a sticky feel. It's a pain for putting on make up. Did you ever try that one and notice that? Does the cream leave any stickiness? Before, I was using the Ranbaxy moisturizer that my dermatologist gave me as a sample which I loved, but I ran out and don't know where to get more (I asked him but never got back to me).

I’ve recently Found your blog, so I apologize if I’m a little late to this but I used Accutane in my early 20’s, 10 year later still clear and pretty much oil free, best decision I made. I think it takes some time to forgot what its like to have bad skin but its not been a second thought for years now. I had a strange side effect where I lost about 40% of my hair; luckily I have thick hair but it just shows everyone has a different effects, and as soon as I stopped it grew back!

I read all these blogs and watch YouTubers on Accutane advise on using some form of oil or oil-containing product in their skin-care/make-up routine, and it baffles me because my dermatologist has told me to only use oil-free products and avoid absolutely anything with oil in it, regardless of its comedogenic claims else you’re counteracting the effects of Accutane in doing its primary job of reducing oil production – which is what causes acne.
Could you please explain why you use or used to use products with oil in it whilst on Accutane?
