How To: Clean Jewelry & Make-Up Brushes w/ Products in Your Kitchen

I’ve Snapchatted how I clean my wedding rings, Yurman, & make-up brushes several times before but I continue to get asked how I do it so I thought I’d do a full out post! Hopefully you’ll find this useful – many of the products I am using are ones that are already in my kitchen so that makes it even easier!

JEWELRY:
The first thing I do with my jewelry is mixed Windex with warm water. I usually just use a small cup and let it soak for 5-6 minutes. I use this technique for my David Yurman jewelry (w/ exception of enamel pieces) & my wedding rings. (A Yurman employee taught me the Windex trick and our jewelry also told us to do this as well.)

The next few steps are optional, but I always do this.. So, I grab a toothbrush & run it under warm water & then pump a bit of the Dawn soap (this exact soap is the best) & then lightly scrub. You don’t have to scrub too hard because the warm water kind of loosens up the dirt & the Windex will help shine up your stones/diamonds/metal/etc.  Also, you don’t have to go buy a special toothbrush for this or anything. I just use the one from the Dentist (lol, I am sure he’d be proud if he saw this – its my friend Elle’s dad!)
My rings are always super, super sparkly and clean after this! I usually just lie it on a clean towel and let it air dry. My wedding rings are by Henri Daussi for those who have been asking. Also, I would like to clean them once weekly (especially wedding set) but I usually only do it every 2-3 weeks. I’m the worst with getting lotion (guacamole!!!) or other weird stuff in my rings. :/
^Our dishes are HERE. I’m just using one of the teacups to soak the jewelry. These were the dishes we registered for when getting married and I didn’t realize I’d never use the teacups or saucers so voila.. using them now. 🙂

MAKE-UP BRUSHES:
The make-up brush cleaning is very similar to ring cleaning so I usually do it all at the same time. Typically, I do this at night so that my brushes can dry over night.

I soak the head of the brushes in warm water mixed with a few pumps of the Dawn dish soap. You can skip this step if you don’t have time, but I will say this step is what loosens & breaks up the makeup. If you are like me and wear a long-wear foundation, it’s good to soak them for about 5 minutes. You’ll notice the water in the bowl will turn brown super quickly! After they’ve soaked, I pump a little bit of the Dawn foam onto the top of the brush and use a brush cleaning tool to scrub out the old makeup. (The one I am using above is old – all of my brush cleaning mits are over at our old still.. or MIA?!)

Tips: I recommend avoid getting water anywhere on the brush except the head. If you get water into the handle, it will break up the glue and fall apart more quickly. That being said, when you soak the brushes, do it the way you see in the photos where its just the hairs in the water/soap mixture. Obviously you can’t keep the rest of it dry so make sure you allow them to dry with the handle kind of elevated. (lololol.) I hope this makes sense! I usually roll up a clean towel and place the handle where it’s raised up so that water will drain out. (if this is confusing I’ll put something on Snapchat.)

Another tip: Use this dish soap! (No, this is not a sponsored post!) We keep a similar hand soap at our sink that is red and smells good and is also foam. The first time I was cleaning my brushes I was just going to use the hand soap… well halfway through cleaning I noticed I was accidently pumping the Dawn soap and when I was using it I saw that the water was turning a more make-up-y color.. as if this soap was getting more product out. Also, I notice that the brushes look more like new when I use this soap over a hand soap. I’ve been doing this for a year and I’ve not lost any brushes or had anything bad happen so it won’t tear up your brushes. ALSO! I want to throw this out there, I have purchased TONS of brush cleaners and tbh, none impress me. They all seem a little overpriced and none get my brushes this clean. And some of the Pinterest tips make your brush smell like Vinegar so skip that too!

Last tip: Make sure you get a brush cleaning tool! I said before mine is a random old one but the other I have are HERE & HERE. One is a mitt so you can slip your hand in and really scrub, the other sits in your sink which also keeps you from making a bigger mess!

John and I love this soap for dishes, too, obviously! So we just purchased on Pump bottle and keep the refills (as seen in image above) under the cabinet so we can just refill.

Also, I love my Artis Oval 8 – would you all like a review?! I need to get one of THESE for cleaning in between uses.

  3. WHAT?! You can get rings clean with diluted windex? Girl, you just changed my world! I used to go to the jewelers and have them do it every time… I'm a newlywed so I guess I'm a newbie at having rings but seriously that's so cool. Going to try it right now!
