My mom is NYC-obsessed so we took her for her birthday last December and that was what she asked for this year [shocking]. The time of year is when NY is very crowded, busy, & very cold – but it is also very magical & beautiful. The snowfall just topped it off, really. While I was there I received many questions from readers asking for tips on how to pack or what to wear because they are also coming into the city. I thought I’d quickly share what I found the most useful while I was there as a guide to help you all if you are packing for somewhere cold!
First of all – it is all about your basics and your accessories. The turtleneck sweater I am wearing is one from last year? I think. I love these turtlenecks because they are tunic length so they cover your back side well when paired w/leggings. I also have it in white. The key is to find a turtleneck sweater that is warm, yet not bulky and will fit well under layers. I would highly recommend this one simple because of the length (it isn’t super long tho!) and because it doesn’t feel uncomfortable under coats/jackets. Next, basic that I would recommend are comfortable leggings/pants. I opted for my Spanx faux leather leggings because they keep me warm but they are also figure flattering. When I am in NY I am usually working and attending meetings so I like to be somewhat dressed up. I opted for the faux leather look over regular leggings because it has a more chic, sophisticated look. Finally, you need accessories – I always pack beanies & gloves. I love the UGG gloves because they have the cute fur trim but also because they allow you to use your phone… aka they are warm & functional. As far as beanies, that is totally up to your style preference but I like ones w/poms on top – just because it makes a cute accessory. The beanie is a must because you’ve got to keep your ears warm – but it doesn’t hurt if it is cute, too! 🙂
The great think about all of those ^^ is that they can be mixed and matched easily. I wore the black turtleneck & faux leather leggings almost daily when I was there! I just add a different beanie and/or coat to really change the look up! If you are wearing the same coat over & over – just add different sweaters/beanies/lipstick/sunglasses to mix it up. Also, if you are going to something special – taking a really funky/fun coat is a great way to glam up a look!
