THE BEST HIGH END MATTE LIP STAINS
Over the past few months, I have been trying numerous matte lip stains. I love love love a glossy lip but I go back and forth between the matte look & the glossy look! I more or less just alternate between the two. I do find that I tend to like matte lip look more during the winter & fall months. However, that is also when my lips get more dry so I like to switch it up if my lips look too dry for a matte look. Overall, my lips are not super dry as long as I apply a thick coat of this at night & apply oil in the morning when I do my skincare routine.
I really like Kylie’s lip stains a lot – I think her color selection is so good but they are SO very drying. That is actually part of why I got the idea to try new matte lip stains. Additionally, I received PR packages from both Smashbox & YSL during November(?) with all of the colors of their new liquid lip formulas. Over the past 3 months I just started trying different brands out when I was at Sephora and also trying the ones in my PR room. I’m not going to mention all of the brands I tried since I kind of just want to focus on the ones I really liked the most. Out of the high end options & more affordable options, I do find that I tend to wear the high end ones most frequently as I know they aren’t going into lines or transferring/smearing on my face. The affordable options are SO great though and the 3 I mention I would recommend!
YSL Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain
This formula is the most unique out of all of them to me. It is very “watery” and cool feeling, if you will. It is not a thick, creamy consistency. In reality, it took me a little getting used to because it has a super light weight, wet feel when applying it. Online, the brand describes it as a ‘naked’ feel and I think that is the perfect word. You truly can not feel this – as it is not sticky or dry feeling at all. I love the brush & use it as a ‘liner’ to line my lips then fill them in. It is very pigmented, but I find that I like to go over where I’ve filled them in a second time to really darken the color. It is long wearing & online the brand claims for it to be 8 hours. I actually have never paid enough attention to the hours I’ve worn it but I do find it to stay put for quite some time.
My favorite colors (that I’ve tried) are 1, 5, 7, 20, 23. I am wearing 7 in the photos above where I am holding it. It’s a great pink/nude everyday color.
Smashbox Always On Liquid Matte Lipstick
This liquid, matte formula is also an amazing one and one I get TONS of compliments on – especially when I wear the shades “Big Spender” & “Spoiler Alert”. This lip stain is more like a normal matte liquid lip in my opinion. It is not like the YSL that feels “naked” – instead it goes on feeling like any other liquid lip stain. It is easy to apply and only takes one coat. It is super long wearing (claims to be 8 hours and again, I haven’t actually timed it but I do find it it to be very long wearing! And the key is that it is not drying at all. It has an oil in it to keep your lips hydrated in fact AND it doesn’t get lost in lines or anything. It totally stays put.
NARS Powermatte Liquid Lip Pigment
Right now I only own one shade of this lip stain and it is “Save The Queen” and I love it! It’s a really pretty pink shade – but purply-pink – not pink pink.. lol. Its what I find to be the perfect pink for winter to pair with cozy, chunky, knitted sweaters. I really, really love this one because it is lightweight and has a watery feeling similar to the YSL. However, it does not feel “naked”, instead, it has a little bit of stickiness at first. That does not bother me in the least because I love the look I get from this. It is pigmented & not dry looking. The colors in the selection are really beautiful – though I have only purchased one – I do want to try some more. 🙂 The only downside I have found is that unlike the others – if I kiss Luke with this one on – it will transfer a bit. Now, I don’t mind transfer at all, but I know some of you do so I thought I’d just throw that out there.
Dior Rouge Liquid Lip Stain
This liquid-lippie I randomly purchased back in the fall and got the shade “Hypnotic” and I wore it SOOO much. It is a wonderful nude shade and is very matte looking. I notice online it doesn’t look nude but on my skin tone it does, kind of odd! Again, it does not look dry and does not dry out your lips. This one claims to be a 12 hour wear – and I wouldn’t disagree though I have not tested/timed it for 12 hours. Like the others, it is pigmented and beautiful and just has an overall gorgeous, matte look.

~ I feel like I am repeating myself with these ^ because they are all just really beautiful, long wearing latte lip stains. I can’t say I prefer one over the other because in all honesty I like them all equally. I mainly just have certain shades from each brand that I like best so I wanted to break down the formula for each! If you are someone who wants colors but wants totally fuss free and not to even be able to feel it – you may prefer the YSL. I don’t mind being able to feel the product so I like all of them! ~
Lipland Liquid Lipstick
I randomly got a PR package with the new liquid lipsticks from Lipland and I was kind of surprised. I don’t get a lot of PR from them so it was unexpected & like a Christmas present. Out of the 4 shades, the one I love the most and wear the most is “Dollface”.This lipstick is VERY good for the $8 price point and I do wear it regularly! However, I can’t say that it not drying. My lips do get a bit drier with it – but I really love the color so I don’t mind.
Morphe Lip Contour
Back in September I received the Morphe Lip Contouring set called ‘Vinyl’ and I have really loved it this winter. It is a liquid lip stick & liner. It creates a very bold look! It is not really red – it is more of a brick-like red. So it is a dark shade but it has a tinge of something to it. I tend to skip the liner and just wear this since it is so pigmented and I am usually in a hurry! 🙂 It is $15 which is a really good price point but for me it is a little drying/not quite as long wearing but I don’t mind it at all. It is not a big deal for me to re-apply.
Flower Cosmetics Miracle Matte Liquid Lip
They sent me every shade in their line and I honestly didn’t jump at the chance to try them. I just started trying them a few weeks ago when I noticed the color selection is really good. I believe these are $8-$10?! And for that price point, I do love them! Now, they don’t compare to the high end brands in full but I will happily wear these. They have a creamy consistency going on so you can feel it – unlike the high end brands – but that is not a game changer for me. The only downside is that they aren’t as long wearing and they do transfer a bit. Overall, if you want to save some money, I would recommend grabbing at least one to test out! *The two photos I posted on my IG a couple of days ago, I was wearing the shade “Rosewood”.
I love them all, the ysl lip stain is just amazing! Thanks for sharing <3

Hello emily,
I wanted to say i am a huge FaN! Now that your a mom and funny that i became a mom last year, is it possible that you can do a blog on if you sleep trained luke? My son is 6 months Old and i would like to have him be able to sleep on his own. I wAs wondering if you had a routine/ tips.
I LOve your style and posts. I have a few questions about some of the itmes you have posted. I am currently saving for my next Louis Vuitton. I also have a deep love for the brand! I have a speedy 30, the cluny MM, and my wonderful husband got me the sippy wallet for christmas. I’ve been looking at the alma MM in the black Epi leather. The closest LV store is three hours away so I’ve been looking online and sometimes that is not an accurate picture and I love to see and feel the bags in person. Have you seen this bag in person? I love my cluny but it is a liitle small and i worried the Alma may be the same.
I typical put my lipstick on in the car because my lipsticks are in my purse. THis is not the best system because I end up trying to pick what to wear at red lights on the way to school. Do you leave your liners and lipsticks in a make up bag or do you leave them at home and just grab the one you are wearing that day.
I love your LV and Gucci belts. do you have the reversible LV belt in the epi leather on one side and monogram on the other? I’d love to see a review on this belt.
I did use some gift cards i received for christmas to purchase the t3 curling iron. I just got it thursday and have only used it once but I did like it. my hair is a little shorter than yours and i ordered the 1 inch clamp barrel. Is that the barrel you use most of the time? I am wanting the big full curls. Not sure if i used too small of sections, or if I need to swtich the barrel for a larger one.
Sorry for such a long post. have a great weekend!
What super cute lip options!
