I’ll let you all in on a little secret [if you have ever met me in person you probably already know bc I am an open book] BUT.. when I found out I was having a boy I was kind of bummed. In all honesty, my entire life I pictured myself having 1.2 million boys bc I am so insanely girly. Well, my OBGYN is one of the best in Tulsa – he is well known for many reasons and one of them is always being able to know the gender at around 10-12week (he also showed me the baby in 4D every.single.appt.) Well! Right around 10 weeks I was like “umm ok so boy or girl?” and he was like “ummm, actually, Emily, it looks like this baby is a girl… 75% girl I’d guess right now.” Oh. my. gosh(!!) I wore a hot pink sweater to this appointment in hopes of hearing those words.. I was grinning ear to ear and snap chatting my entire family the “good news” & literally running with it! (insert eye roll emoji) I had to wait about 10 days before I got the genetic testing results back to confirm that this was indeed a “girl”. And guess what… the woman calls and confirms that the baby is healthy – which of course is the most important thing of all. [Really a healthy baby is the most important thing above all else and I feel blessed beyond measure that the Lord allowed me to become a mother to Luke.] Then she says “okay, so did the Dr. already tell you his guess on gender?!” And I’m like “oh ya, I already know! It’s a girl!!!” and she is like “oh, wait… what?” and I thought she was playing around. Long story short… she confirms that the baby is a boy and I was so sad. I called a couple of girlfriends [also very girly girls like me] who have sons and they admitted they were (secretly) sad as well but they knew better to talk about it openly haha. Like I said – I am an open book! Anyway, I promise there’s a reason for all of this chit chat – I am getting there. I will tell you this – my dad was SO excited about me having a son – oh my goodness! So was my brother, Paul. Paul has 3 girls and one boy so I’m sure he was in the opposite boat. In all honesty, a large part of why I wanted a daughter first so badly was because girls are my jam- lol! 🙂 Like, I can talk bows, purses, pink, purple, diamonds, hair, lipsticks, makeup, curls, etc. ALL. day. long. and not grow tired of it. Anyway, I got used to the idea and started shopping online for clothing / nursery stuff / etc. and quickly found that there really is NOT much out there for baby boys. For every single cute boy outfit there are like 25 cute girl outfits:: AKA you gotta work it hard to find the good stuff…
FAST FORWARD TO NOW –>
Here we are nearly fall time of 2017 and I can’t believe I am saying this but I absolutely LOVE having a boy! Seriously it is so much fun – I am so crazy over Luke David Gemma it is nuts!!! I have SO much fun getting him dressed and shopping for him! When we were packing for Canada I was like “umm John, can we just take photos of Luke on this trip bc his outfits are 100x cuter than mine and I write a fashion blog!!!” Seriously, I never knew I could have so much fun dressing a boy! One of the best parts is that it is a bit challenging finding fun boy clothing and nearly every where we go we get stopped by people asking about his clothing and outfits. A lot of his stuff is actually just the mini version of something John has or something I have which I think is so hysterical. John has a preppier style – so obviously Luke has a lot of preppy things.
Cute Baby Boy Clothes
Okay – all of this to say that I get asked about where I shop for him a lot and honestly I do a huge chunk of shopping for him on Nordstrom. I like it because they have all of the brands that we really love for baby like Patagonia, North Face, Gucci, Burberry, Adidas, etc. I noticed last night that they are now carrying Kickee Pants!!!! Oh my goodness – I literally get asked about his PJs and footies all the time and ab died when I saw Nordstrom is carrying them. Just a warning that these suckers sell out so fast so act quickly. I actually place a massive order before the line is ever released and stock up — and I always buy duplicates bc these are the best gifts. Kickee Pants are made out of a bamboo fabric (like Piko tops) so they are super soft and they come in the most adorable prints! So ya, Nordstrom is the hot spot for cute baby boy clothing! When I am splurging on his clothing I go for Burberry (remember how Katey McFarlan’s babe, Maxi, got Luke THIS footie?! He wore this like it was going out of style and we just passed it on to Luke’s BFF Callahan who was born last week!).. but when it comes to daily outfits I like Tucker + Tate or Peek.
Also love Sarah Kety’s little onesies that are like doctor themed or football themed – I just ordered a football one yesterday bc John likes for Luke to watch Ohio State w/him! Whewwwww okay this is so long! But I just wanted to answer a few questions about baby boy clothing that I have been getting.
Also, just bc I know people will ask – like 3 of my very best girlfriends just had baby boys right after Luke so we package his stuff up as he outgrows it and take it to them. It all gets passed around from baby to baby so it’s getting it’s money’s worth for sure. I steam his clothing in the drier for ab 3 minutes [after washing it] and let it hang dry the rest of the way so that it doesn’t lose its color vibrancy, shape, size, etc. bc I like being able to pass it on to his besties. 🙂
Thanks to Nordstrom for sponsoring today’s post.
Where do you like to get cute baby boy clothes from? Let me know in a comment below!
That little track suit is quite possibly the cutest thing I have ever seen. What a doll Luke is!!
I didn’t find out what I was having and wanted a girl (healthy being the first priority). I am super girly and wasn’t sure what I would do with a boy. I ended up having a girl and another girl 15 months later. my husband died 2 short years later of cancer and I am so blessed and happy I have 2 girls. I don’t think I would have been able to raise a boy alone like I do my girls. although the most important thing is always a healthy baby. hopefully a girl in your future though to do all the girly things with!
I absolutely love how open and honest you are. It’s not a trait you see in all bloggers so I just want to let you know that I know all your readers appreciate it! I think I would have the same exact reaction just because I’m a super girly girl too but now I realize just how fun it is dressing up little boys!!!! Like ok Luke needs to be a baby model – he is just so precious. Just like his mommy and dad!
Single, no babies here and i lovE this post! Lots of my friends are having baby boys and i too am always a little disappointed when its a boy. Saving this for FutUre gift reference! Also i just love your “chit chatty” pOsts!
i completely feel ya!! I was the only girl in my family growing up and only girl oUt of my cousins on my father’s side. I KNEW this family was due a girl when i had my first child! When i went to our sono and was told we were having a boy, i sobbed! And still held hope the lady was wrong until i gave birth, ha. Well i Now have two boys -9 and 6 – and am crazy over them! They have the sweetest hearts and melt my heart. My youngest Thanks God every night during bedtime prayer for me and it still makes me smile with joy.
YES YES YES and I get it for sure! like 110%!!! Boys are the sweetest things in the world!
wow … sO GLAD YOU CAN NOW LOVE YOUR SON NOW THAT YOU FOUND OUT YOU CAN ENJOY SHOPPING FOR HIM. wtf…

i loved this post! I’m not pregnant/ not a mama yet, but in my family there are definitely more girls than boys. so this is an incredibly helpful post to get ideas and inspiration for the future.
your son is a little cutie and i cannot wait to continue seeing him grow. Bless all three of you!
I’m expecting our first right now (due in February) and my husband wanted it to be a girl more than anything. Our ob guessed at 11w5d and said she thought it was a boy…we found out 4 days later through the blood work she was right and he was so upset. I feel the same way about clothing! I am so picky about what I want him to wear and not wear. I’ve told family and friends I basically don’t want any wording on his clothing because I feel like little boy clothing can be so tacky sometimes…just my honest truth! I make sure I show my husband your snapchats and pictures of Luke to get him excited. He went out and bought a patagonia when he saw Luke in his! Love following your sweet family!
Thanks for your honesty, i can totally relate! hes adorable!!
How cute is The tracksuit on him? I totally love This New cOloR too. I am a mom to a 9 month old and i totally feel this post! I was and am totally on the same boat as you. I too am super girly so naTUrally i was hoping for a girl too, but found out it was a boy… i kinda knew it would be a boy but My bump was looking like a girl (according to everyone). AnyhoW as i got biggeR, i loved knowing my first was a boy! Of course now i cant imagine It being any DIFFERENT!
It really is a challenge finding super cute pieces and outfits for a boy. i agree with you 200% for every 1 cute outfit, theres like 30 cute girl outfits (annoying!!!). The thought of creating a cute affordable boy Store/line Even cRosSed my mind. A million times. Lol.
Anyways, thank you for this post… so glad to Follow you cause u are so Stylish and your son’s fashion is just as cute!!
I aLso have a boy, he just turned 2! I cried when telling my mom i was having a boy bc we were convincEd it would be a girl (bc my mom & i aRe so close). Really i was just sad i couldnt buy bows & unicorn stuff? I cried again after that for being upset, Yay pregnancy hormones!?
Now i cant even imagine life without my baby boy! They really are so fun!!
Hey girl. I think you have a typo in the first paragraph. you say you could imagine 1.2 million boys, but you were bummed about the boy reveal. Just wanted you to know so you could clear that up.
Oh lol I meant it! Like I thought I’d have all boys — and then when he said a girl I like ran with the idea haha! I got used it in my brain! Whoops!
Thank you so much for sharing with us! luke is soo adorable!!

I commend you for sharing about your “gender disappointment!” I found out a month ago that I am having a baby girl, and I cried…at the doctors office, and on and off for a few days. I spent years during my infertility dreaming up the boys my husband and i would raise- named them, planned a boy nursery, EVERYthing LOL, but now I’m happy to be expecting a girl. I think lots of women experience this, but we all end up happy in the end, and i think it’s awesome to be so transparent about it 🙂
What a great post today!!! I don’t know a single girlfriend of mine who doesn’t hope for a girl first, then boys. Their husbands always want that boy first, lol. i think you have done such a great job dressing him and your husband is a truly talented photographer. you make a super team. i guess god was preparing you all for a boy with fitz!! hope he’s doing well these days because i tell you that is one photogenic dog; he totally fits your family. always pray god’s blessings and wisdom for you. 🙂
Thank you fot your HONESTLY aboUt wanting a girl! I was In thAt place too–35 years ago! He is such a joy and was so much fun to raise. We did have a girl next, so i hope you get your girl as well! ???
My sons are 16 and 14 now, and I cried when I found out the first one was a boy because I am girly and was so looking forward to dressing up my baby girl. And agree, it was so hard finding cute stuff because there just wasn’t much out there, but I did it, and enjoyed it. I was cool when I found out my 2nd was a boy, because boys are seriously the best! wouldn’t trade these 2 for anything:-) Your luke is a doll, enjoy every minute with him!
I’M a mom of two girls, and when i first found out our giret grandchild was a boy i was a bit disappointed. It diDnt take long to get over the disappointment though, and now after three more grandsons i can tRuly say i wouldnt want it any other way.
This is the worst thing ive ever read. You are legit a horrible human being. Please give your baby To someone that will appreciate him even if hes not in designer clothes, you fucking scumbag.

Luke is so freaking cute.
I totally get where you are coming from, I have always wanted a girl and cant see myself with a boy. but the older I get (and smarter!) the more I am content with having a healthy baby no matter what the gender and know how big of a blessing it is to be able to be a mom at all! you seem like the best mom to luke and fitzy!

I felt the same way when i found oUt i was having a boy. I grew up with sisters so i had no idea what to even do with a bOY. But just like you, my perspeCtive completely changed as soon as i had Brooks. He is almost three now, and if you think you enjoy lUke as a baby, just wait until he gets a little olDer! The imagination and stories of a 3rd old Boy are amazing!!!
FYI WHEN BROOKS WAS 1Yr+ I sTarted to find a lot of cute things on old navy 🙂

oh my gosh!! anyone who says they were not devastated when they heard the opposite of what they hoped for is so full of it!! I WANted a girl sooooooooooo bad i was so convinced i was having a girl and i was so sad when they told me i was having a boy!! lol but i swear i wouldnt change him for the world.
I have an 8 month old son. I’m an OB/GYn. I was convinced I was having a girl too. I am super girly as well. I was super bummed to find out I was having a boy but now I know that boys are the best!!! Boys love their mamas and I get to be the princess in the family now more than ever. My husband spoils me and now so does my baby boy!
TOTALLY agree w/you! I get it – its kind of fun being the only girl!
